Democrats brace for ‘red wave’ in the wake of Virginia defeat

1 min read

Democrats’ prospects of winning next year’s midterm elections look bleak after the party endured a wretched election night on Tuesday, local time.

In a devastating result for Democrats the party lost the blue-leaning seat of Virginia and narrowly hung on to power in New Jersey.

Republican Glenn Youngkin’s victory in Virginia came as a surprise, partly because Joe Biden won the state by 10 percentage points last November.

The elections are the first major tests of voter sentiment since Mr Biden took office and show that the Democrats have fallen out of favour with voters.
